Hoge Veluwe National Park, The nature of Holland

Hoge Veluwe National Park, The nature of Holland

The Netherlands is totally flat!”, said my host dad when I asked him where I could hike in The Netherlands. If you are in The Netherlands, don’t expect to see a huge mountain, because it doesn’t exist! Some people miss to walk into the nature and it seems a bit difficult to do that in The Netherlands. But don’t worry, Hoge Veluwe National Park will be your new favourite place in The Netherlands.

My boyfriend and I had a chance to visit it on the weekend during the Autumn season and it was very beautiful with these orange trees around. Hoge Veluwe surprised with its tremendous landscape because every time you move around with your bike you will see different things such as sand dunes, green fields, savanna, and woods. I love these diverse views so much!

How to get there?

You could take a train to Ede-Wageningen or Apeldoorn to reach Hoge Veluwe. From Ede-Wageningen/Aperdoorn station, take the bus 108 to Hoenderloo and from there take the bus 106 to Otterlo (this bus stop near Kröller-Müller Museum).

Where to stay?

There are many hotels near Hoge Veluwe, but if you are in budget, you can search some cheap accommodation via Airbnb.com. I found a nice place to spend a night via Airbnb and you can always choose the best place for you.

Cycling Around Hoge Veluwe

There are three entrances to get into Hoge Veluwe:  Konigsweg 17, Schaarbergen; Houtkampweg 9, Otterloo; and Houtkampweg 13, Hoenderloo. Last time, I went in via Otterloo and you could easily spot the ticket counter in front of it. The entrance fee is 20 euro, this included park entry, museum entry as well as for bicycle usage in the park. My boyfriend and I went there early around 08.00, so we could enjoy this national park longer.

When you enter the park, you will see the so many white bicycles parking nicely. I heard that they provide 1.800 bikes for the visitors, so you can take one of them and start exploring this National park. If you like to walk, go ahead to do that but remember that this national park is very huge. it comprises 5.400 hectares of variable landscape.  Cycling is the easiest way to explore this beautiful place and enjoy the magnificent scenery. This park has 40 kilometres of cycling paths, can’t imagine if I have to walk all the way!

While you are exploring The Hoge Veluwe, don’t forget to stop at St. Hubertus and The Kröller-Müller Museum. The Kröller-Müller Museum is the cultural museum in the middle of the forest and it has the most beautiful sculpture gardens in Europe as well as the largest private Van Gogh collection in this world.

If you are a wild life spotter, you could visit this park in the afternoon of evening to get a better chance of spotting some wild animals such as wild boar, red deer, wild sheep and roe deer. I saw so many kind of birds when I was there, and it was amazing to see them closer in the wild.

Be prepared to see the another amazing part of the Netherlands. Don’t forget to bring your winter clothes, if you decided to visit this park in the Autumn because it could feel a bit cold. Enjoy your trip, guys!
